SUMMARY:Birds and Brews 21+: Bill Rapai and Noble Stein Brewing Company
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy beer brewed locally by Noble Stein Brewing Company from Indiana\, PA and hear author and bird enthusiast Bill Rapai’s presentation The Kirtland’s Warbler: From the brink of extinction to a new model for endangered species conservation. \nThe Kirtland’s Warbler is an iconic species in Michigan\, nesting primarily in the jack pine forests of the northern Lower Peninsula. As recently as 1987 there were fewer than 400 birds in the entire population. Today\, there are more than 4\,000 birds\, and the population continues to grow to a point where the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has determined its population is now at a level to be considered “recovered.” In October 2019\, the Kirtland’s Warbler was removed from the Endangered Species List.\nThat’s a reason to celebrate\, but it doesn’t mean we can wash our hands and walk away because conservation of the Kirtland’s Warbler has special challenges. Unlike every other animal that has been removed from the Endangered Species List\, the Kirtland’s Warbler will require continued human intervention to ensure its survival. \nBill Rapai is the author of The Kirtland’s Warbler: The story of a bird’s fight for survival and the people who saved it. He is the executive director of the Kirtland’s Warbler Alliance\, a nonprofit created to support Kirtland’s Warbler conservation. \n  \nVisitors are expected to adhere to the public health guidance and Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh procedures in place at the time of their visit. \n[swcheckout site=”6″ item=”114495″]

SUMMARY:Birds and Brews 21+: Scott Weidensaul and Four Seasons Brewery
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy beer brewed locally by Four Seasons Brewery in Latrobe\, PA and hear bird expert Scott Weidensaul’s talk “A World on the Wing: The Global Odyssey of Migratory Birds.” \nAbstract:\nEven as scientists make astounding discoveries about the navigational and physiological feats that enable migratory birds to cross immense oceans or fly above the highest mountains\, go weeks without sleep or remain in unbroken flight for months at a stretch\, humans have brought many migrants to the brink. Based on his bestselling new book A World on the Wing\, author and researcher Scott Weidensaul takes you around the globe — with researchers in the lab probing the limits of what migrating birds can do\, to the shores of the Yellow Sea in China\, the remote mountains of northeastern India where tribal villages saved the greatest gathering of falcons on the planet\, and the Mediterranean\, where activists and police are battling bird poachers — to learn how people are fighting to understand and save the world’s great bird migrations. \nAbout Scott Weidensaul:\nScott Weidensaul is the author of nearly 30 books on natural history\, including the Pulitzer Prize finalist Living on the Wind and his latest\, the New York Times bestseller A World on the Wing. Weidensaul is a contributing editor for Audubon and writes for a variety of other publications\, including Living Bird. He is a Fellow of the American Ornithological Society and an active field researcher\, studying saw-whet owl migration for more than two decades\, as well as winter hummingbirds in the East\, bird migration in Alaska\, and the winter movements of snowy owls through Project SNOWstorm\, which he co-founded. \n  \nVisitors are expected to adhere to the public health guidance and Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh procedures in place at the time of their visit. \n[swcheckout site=”6″ item=”114494″]
