DESCRIPTION:Bats have numerous ecological and economic benefits including\, for species in the northeast U.S.\, insect suppression and nutrient distribution. Yet the negative stereotypes and myths associated with bats can adversely affect efforts toward their conservation. Wildlife Biologist and Powdermill Volunteer\, Julie Zeyzus will discuss species found in Pennsylvania and documented at Powdermill Nature Reserve\, provide an overview of the challenges bats face\, and discuss national strategies and applications for the backyard bat biologist that will contribute to the conservation of these important yet often misunderstood mammals. \nJoin us as we explore seasonal natural history phenomena of Powdermill Nature Reserve! SUMMARY:Carnegie Discoverers: Plant and Climate Change: Predicting the Future by Looking to the Past
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Benjamin R. Lee\, PhD\, National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow\, Holden Arboretum\, University of Pittsburgh; Botany\, Carnegie Museum of Natural History  \nClimate change poses one of the largest existential threats to natural systems. In North American temperate forests\, hotter\, drier summers are expected to negatively impact plant performance directly\, while changing conditions are also likely to influence species’ interactions. Research exploring the ways in which climate change will affect interactions among temperate forest species\, with special emphasis on plant-plant and plant-fungal interactions\, will be presented.  Of importance will be how the historical plant specimens collected by global herbaria can be used to gain insight into the future of temperate forests. \nThis is a Carnegie Discoverers meeting. DESCRIPTION:Join us for Earth Day Nature Walks at Powdermill! On Saturday\, April 22\, explore the trails with your choice of hike through the nature reserve. During each walk we’ll demonstrate how to use the iNaturalist app to upload photos of nature to identify birds\, plants\, fungi\, and more. All walks are family-friendly and meet at the Nature Center. Registration is recommended to guarantee your spot. If there are spots available at the time of the program\, non-registered individuals can join on a first-come\, first-served basis. \n9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Porcupine Ridge: This is a strenuous hike that can be steep at times\, with a vertical ascent of over 500 feet. Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended. \n1:15 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. Sugar Camp Trail: This is a moderate\, at times muddy hike with gradual slopes. Moriarty Science Seminar Presents: “Sleuthing on Cryptic Mammals at Powdermill Nature Reserve: Bobcats & Coyotes & Bears\, Oh My!“\nSpeakers: Dr. Jan Janecka\, Duquesne University  \nThis event will take place Monday\, April 24 at Noon online via Zoom. \nAbstract: Pennsylvania experienced removal of forest habitat and alterations associated with open pit mining. Starting in the 1960s\, pressure on forests was alleviated leading to regeneration across much of Pennsylvania. This contributed to the recovery of many mammals in the Laurel Highlands\, such as the bobcat\, as well as influx of species that historically did not occur here\, such as the coyote. The legacy of mining continues to affect diversity. Powdermill Nature Reserve is an excellent study site to address these dynamics as it encompasses the remains of an abandoned open pit mine. There are plans for mine reclamation to take place. How has this pit mine effected mammal diversity and movement? How will the changes associated with the reclamation affect mammals? These are important questions to address not only for Laurel Highlands\, but more broadly for the ecosystems of the mid-Atlantic region and beyond. Mammals including bobcats\, coyotes\, and black bears\, as well as prey species\, were surveyed in open pit mine and control plots at Powdermill using camera traps. Comparisons provide insight on how abandoned open pit mines affect mammal diversity and habitat use. The data collected also provides an opportunity to understand changes that will occur after the reclamation.\n. \nRegister Now

Moriarty Science Seminar Presents: “10 Things I Hate About ‘Nature\,’ or a Political Ecology of Conservation“\nSpeakers: Dr. Noah Theriault\, Carnegie Mellon University  \nThis event will take place Monday\, May 8 at Noon in person in Earth Theater and online via Zoom. \nAbstract: “Nature” and “natural” are part of our everyday vocabulary\, but we rarely pause to ask what exactly these words mean. How we define them reveals as much about our own worldviews as about anything else. Our beliefs\, social identities\, occupations\, and idiosyncrasies are all implicated in how we differentiate what is natural from what is anthropogenic\, artificial\, unnatural\, supernatural\, deviant\, or mutant. This distinction—between nature and its antonyms—pervades our social structures and political debates even as it evades our critical reflection. Using the principles of political ecology to examine biodiversity conservation in the Philippines\, this seminar will push us to consider how conceptions of nature shape our relations with ourselves\, with one another\, and with the world around us\, often in ways that unintentionally reproduce social and ecological harm. SUMMARY:Powdermill Avian Research Center Free Guided Tour and Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:Powdermill Avian Research Center (PARC) offers FREE guided tours of the bird banding lab and research facility. Attendees must arrive by 8:00 a.m. in order to join the tour. These behind-the-scenes experiences allow people to visit the bird banding lab and see up-close how researchers safely capture and band birds\, and learn about the data they gather. Visitors will also be guided to PARC’s flight tunnel to hear about how we’re studying avian perception of glass to provide glass manufacturers and building designers with important information that will help reduce bird-window collisions. On your tour\, you’ll have the opportunity to chat with the scientists on staff\, and perhaps visiting researchers\, about the other projects being conducted at PARC. After the tour\, we will go on a guided bird walk.
