SUMMARY:Science and Nature Program and Nature Explorers
DESCRIPTION:Trees in Winter\nTrees in winter all look the same! Actually\, there are many characteristics of bare trees that can be used to identify them in winter (and any other time of year). Come learn about these clues that trees give us to their identity\, and then put your skills to the test out on the trail. \nWhat’s That Tree?\nTree leaves tell us a lot about a tree\, including what kind it is. But what happens in winter when most of the leaves are gone? How do we know which trees are which? Put on your detective caps and search for the clues that tell us! Then we will hit the trail with our newly acquired knowledge.

SUMMARY:Lecture and Cocktails
DESCRIPTION:Archaeology under the Fairmont: Pittsburgh’s Hotel Museum\nIn 2007\, archaeologists discovered 16 sites buried beneath the location planned for the Fairmont Hotel. The site once comprised homes\, boarding houses\, a botanical shop\, a furniture maker\, Pittsburgh’s first department store\, and Andrew Carnegie’s first office. For 160 years\, over 25\,000 artifacts lay beneath 22 feet of dirt\, brick\, and stone. Discovering the relationships among these artifacts\, the archaeological data and written history provided a new perspective about a time when Pittsburgh began to shape a frontier town into a great city. \nChristine Davis\, Archaeologist

SUMMARY:Science and Nature Program and Nature Explorers
DESCRIPTION:Aquatic Entomology: What we can learn from stream-dwelling insects\nHow healthy is the water that flows through Powdermill Run? How about the Monongahela River in downtown Pittsburgh\, or the creek that flows through your backyard? One way to find out is to look at the animals that live in the water. Macroinvertebrates are abundant in all types of aquatic habitats and tell a story about the quality of the water in which they live. Let’s learn with Research Entomologist Andrea Kautz about what kinds of bugs can be found in different types of aquatic environments and then go sample Powdermill Run for ourselves! (Note: We invite you to get into Powdermill Run with us. Please wear closed-toed and -heeled shoes\, such as galoshes or old sneakers\, if you do plan to venture into the cold stream. A towel and a change of shoes/clothes are also recommended.) \nWhere Insects Live\nWhere do we find dragonflies and water bugs? What about stoneflies and caddisflies? Come learn about the different habitats of organisms like these in a hands-on exploration of what macroinvertebrates tell us about water quality. Afterward\, we will head out to Powdermill Run to catch some macroinvertebrates ourselves! (Note: We invite you to get into Powdermill Run with us. Please wear closed-toed and -heeled shoes\, such as galoshes or old sneakers\, if you do plan to venture into the cold stream. A towel and a change of shoes/clothes are also recommended.)
