DESCRIPTION:Songbirds as Carriers of Lyme Disease \nFeaturing Amanda Hill \nAnyone that has spent time in the great outdoors has probably encountered a tick\, either on themselves or on their four-legged companion. However\, there is still much to learn about the diseases that these ticks carry and who is responsible for spreading them. Join us for a talk with Amanda Hill from West Virginia University as she teaches us about Lyme disease in ticks in the Northeastern United States and the role that songbirds might play in their dispersal. She will share the results from her One Health master’s thesis project on songbirds carrying ticks and provide some helpful information about ticks and Lyme disease in this region. After the talk\, we will head outside to see which of these songbirds we can find. \nTick Talk \n“Watch out for ticks!” We all hear it\, but what does it really mean? Come explore with us as we find out more about ticks\, where they’re found\, and how to be “Lyme alert.” After the activities learning about ticks\, we will head outside in search of their hosts and hiding spots.

DESCRIPTION:Assistant Curator and Head of Vertebrate Paleontology Dr. Matt Lamanna will broadcast on Facebook Live to share details of his upcoming research trip to Croatia. Discovered in the 1990s\, the site of Kolone/Porto Colonne on the coast of Istria\, Croatia preserves ~130-million-year-old dinosaur bones in shallow water on the bed of the Adriatic Sea. During the time these dinosaurs were alive\, this area of Croatia was part of a large island or long peninsula in the middle of an ancient ocean. Despite its probable significance\, the site has never been systematically explored by paleontologists. Lamanna and a team of Croatian\, Italian\, and US paleontologists\, geologists\, and scientific divers will conduct a five-day underwater reconnaissance of Kolone/Porto Colonne from October 8–13\, to discover additional fossils\, map the site in detail\, and form a comprehensive plan for future research. \nThe broadcast will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will include a question and answer segment. \nTune in at facebook.com/carnegiemnh. DESCRIPTION:At the next Book and Tour\, discuss the book Future Remains: A Cabinet of Curiosities for the Anthropocene with Carnegie Museum of Natural History Curator of the Anthropocene\, Dr. Nicole Heller\, and Assistant Professor in Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh\, Dr. Tomas Matza. Future Remains is a book of lively essays featuring objects that tell a story about the Anthropocene\, the geological age when humans have become a dominant influence on the Earth system. The objects of today have much to suggest about the future and how this era will affect the planet. \nDr. Heller and Dr. Matza co-wrote the lead essay “Anthropocene in a Jar\,” which mediates on the blurry boundaries\, and often vexed relationship\, between human development and natural processes through the lens of a jar of curiously patterned sand and shells collected at Wrightsville Beach. Dr. Heller and Dr. Matza will perform their essay as it was first presented in an Anthropocene slam at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2014. The pair will also present a collection of “curiosities” from the museum that pair with the essays in the book\, including specimens from mollusks\, gems and minerals\, and our collection of birds. \nThis is a free event\, but those wishing to attend must sign up.
