Moriarty Science Seminar Presents: “10 Things I Hate About ‘Nature\,’ or a Political Ecology of Conservation“\nSpeakers: Dr. Noah Theriault\, Carnegie Mellon University  \nThis event will take place Monday\, May 8 at Noon in person in Earth Theater and online via Zoom. \nAbstract: “Nature” and “natural” are part of our everyday vocabulary\, but we rarely pause to ask what exactly these words mean. How we define them reveals as much about our own worldviews as about anything else. Our beliefs\, social identities\, occupations\, and idiosyncrasies are all implicated in how we differentiate what is natural from what is anthropogenic\, artificial\, unnatural\, supernatural\, deviant\, or mutant. This distinction—between nature and its antonyms—pervades our social structures and political debates even as it evades our critical reflection. Using the principles of political ecology to examine biodiversity conservation in the Philippines\, this seminar will push us to consider how conceptions of nature shape our relations with ourselves\, with one another\, and with the world around us\, often in ways that unintentionally reproduce social and ecological harm. SUMMARY:Science and Nature Lecture: Sixty Years and Counting: The Past\, Present\, and Future of Avian Research at Powdermill
DESCRIPTION:Powdermill Nature Reserve\, Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s environmental field research center\, boasts the longest\, continuously-run\, year-round bird banding station in the country. The ornithologists there have been banding birds for over 60 years and facilitating countless avian research projects\, making many important contributions to scientific literature. Annie Lindsay\, Powdermill’s bird banding program manager\, will review avian research and discoveries made at Powdermill\, and present trends in songbird populations\, behavior\, and morphology using the six-decade banding dataset\, then discuss the future of avian research and outreach with the addition of the new banding facility at Powdermill. \nJoin us as we explore seasonal natural history phenomena of Powdermill Nature Reserve! A lecture will be given in the Parker Room at 2 pm. Lectures are structured for adult audiences\, and children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Events fill up fast! SUMMARY:Carnegie Discoverers: Understanding Diversity at Multiple Trophic Levels by Integrating DNA Metabarcoding and Photo Captures; from the Himalayas to the Laurel Highlands
DESCRIPTION:Jan Janecke\, PhD\, Research Associate\, Carnegie Museum of Natural History\, Associate Professor\, Biological Sciences\, Duquesne University  \nMany mammals are cryptic and difficult to study\, particularly felids and canids.  Genetics and camera trapping are two very different approaches that shed light on the ecology of carnivores\, from the snow leopard and wolf on the Tibetan Plateau to the bobcat and coyote in Appalachia.  At Powdermill Nature Reserve\, DNA metabarcoding and photo captures are being integrated to study ecological communities in the Laurel Highlands.  Among the main goals are to understand recovery from open pit mining\, effectiveness of land reclamation\, as well as how environmental and biological factors influence bobcats\, coyotes\, their prey\, and community diversity. \nThis is a Carnegie Discoverers meeting. SUMMARY:Powdermill Avian Research Center Free Guided Tour
DESCRIPTION:Powdermill Avian Research Center (PARC) offers FREE guided tours of the bird banding lab and research facility. Attendees must arrive by 8:00 a.m. in order to join the tour. These behind-the-scenes experiences allow people to visit the bird banding lab and see up-close how researchers safely capture and band birds\, and learn about the data they gather. Visitors will also be guided to PARC’s flight tunnel to hear about how we’re studying avian perception of glass to provide glass manufacturers and building designers with important information that will help reduce bird-window collisions. On your tour\, you’ll have the opportunity to chat with the scientists on staff\, and perhaps visiting researchers\, about the other projects being conducted at PARC.
