SUMMARY:Lecture and Cocktails
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Forest and the Trees\nIn recent years\, our Powdermill Nature Reserve facility has initiated a number of programs relating to plant ecology that complement its famous avian research programs. These range from cutting-edge basic research to public outreach designed for general accessibility. Some of these programs are accompanied by web-based technology to extend the reserve’s reach worldwide. Its 3D virtual reality program will be incorporated into the museum’s galleries in 2018. \nJohn Wenzel\, PhD\, Director\, Powdermill Nature Reserve

SUMMARY:Training the next generation of conservation scientists: field courses in Borneo
DESCRIPTION:Speaker Jen Sheridan\, Assistant Curator of Amphibians and Reptiles at Carnegie Museum of Natural History \nThis talk focuses on how field courses draw students in to studying natural history and conservation\, and how such courses serve pedagogical goals as well as research goals for participating faculty. Sheridan will share her own initial field experience that set her on her career path\, as well as her endeavors to provide similar field experiences for students. Additionally\, Sheridan will discuss her most recent field teaching experience which brought together early career graduate students from 12 countries in a primary rainforest environment to instruct them on field survey and research methods. Finally\, Sheridan will discuss the student-led research projects most closely related to her own area of expertise\, herpetology\, to highlight how both students and faculty benefit from such field courses. \nThis talk will take place in the Earth Theater.

SUMMARY:The Evolution of Sex and Gender
DESCRIPTION:Speaker Chase Mendenhall\, Assistant Curator of Birds at Carnegie Museum of Natural History \nIn recent decades plants and animals have revealed far more diversity in their bodies and behaviors than Darwin ever imagined\, especially when it comes to cooperating to make and raise offspring. From bacteria to bonobos we will explore the fundamental questions of why sex evolved\, how bodies are built\, and how gender develops from sex. Using the science of cooperation and evidence from our natural history\, we will examine what it means to be an individual\, a male\, a female\, or part of a family or group. Finally\, I will share how natural selection works on groups of organisms to give rise to functional organization like multicellularity\, sociality\, and civilization. \nTo take place in the Earth Theater \n  \n

SUMMARY:Science and Nature Program and Nature Explorers
DESCRIPTION:Drones in the Geosciences\nFeaturing Julia Carr\nJulia Carr\, PhD candidate in Geosciences at Penn State University\, will join us to share some of her research made possible by drones. Also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)\, these electronic gadgets are not just toys\, and Julia has put them to work in places like Taiwan\, Death Valley\, Pennsylvania\, and the northwest USA. UAV surveys permit capturing patterns at high resolution across large-scale areas\, allowing scientists to examine processes at a range of temporal and spatial scales. Working with other scientists\, Julia has coupled UAV surveys with field measurements\, other remote sensing data\, and numerical models to understand how material is moved around during events like typhoons and debris flows\, and to understand how mountain belts evolve. \nRock Cycle Rock!\nIgneous! Metamorphic! Sedimentary! Heat\, pressure\, and time can all make rocks change from one type to another as they move through the rock cycle. We will get up close and personal with some rocks as we investigate and classify them\, and we will act out the rock cycle! After the activity we will meet back with the adults for a brief foray outside.

SUMMARY:Scientists Live: Mason Heberling
DESCRIPTION:Postdoctoral Research Fellow\, Mason Heberling\, will do a broadcast on Facebook Live to share the importance and power of museum specimen digitization! Botanists at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History have recently embarked on a three-year project to digitize nearly 190\,000 plant specimens collected in the region. This effort is part of the Mid-Atlantic Megalopolis Project (mamdigitization.org)\, a network of thirteen herbaria spanning the densely populated urban corridor from Washington\, D.C. to New York City to achieve a greater understanding of our urban areas\, including the unique industrial and environmental history of the greater Pittsburgh area. How have the plants of Pittsburgh changed over the past century? In this interactive broadcast\, Mason will introduce the plant collection at the museum (>0.5 million specimens strong\, dating back the 1800s)\, the uses of these specimens to understanding the world around us\, and the value of digitization and making specimens freely accessible to scientists\, students\, and the public. Each specimen has an important scientific and cultural story to tell. \nThe broadcast will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will include a question and answer segment. \nTune in at facebook.com/carnegiemnh. A recording will be posted later for those unable to watch live.

SUMMARY:Lecture and Cocktails
DESCRIPTION:Studying the Impact of the 66 Million-Year-Old Asteroid Strike on Mammal Evolution\nArmed with four years of National Science Foundation funding\, John Wible and an international team of collaborators are attacking the mystery of what effect the asteroid strike\, which resulted in the demise of non-avian dinosaurs\, had on mammal evolution. Their goal is to choose between the competing theories that the impact had no appreciable effect or that the impact was the principal driver of subsequent mammal evolution. The team’s approach to the problem will be explained\, and an update on the progress of the project’s first year will be provided.\n\nJohn Wible\, PhD\, Curator and Head\, Mammals\, Carnegie Museum of Natural History

SUMMARY:Book and Tour: How can a jar of sand illustrate the impact of humans on the Earth?
DESCRIPTION:At the next Book and Tour\, discuss the book Future Remains: A Cabinet of Curiosities for the Anthropocene with Carnegie Museum of Natural History Curator of the Anthropocene\, Dr. Nicole Heller\, and Assistant Professor in Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh\, Dr. Tomas Matza. Future Remains is a book of lively essays featuring objects that tell a story about the Anthropocene\, the geological age when humans have become a dominant influence on the Earth system. The objects of today have much to suggest about the future and how this era will affect the planet. \nDr. Heller and Dr. Matza co-wrote the lead essay “Anthropocene in a Jar\,” which mediates on the blurry boundaries\, and often vexed relationship\, between human development and natural processes through the lens of a jar of curiously patterned sand and shells collected at Wrightsville Beach. Dr. Heller and Dr. Matza will perform their essay as it was first presented in an Anthropocene slam at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2014. The pair will also present a collection of “curiosities” from the museum that pair with the essays in the book\, including specimens from mollusks\, gems and minerals\, and our collection of birds. \nThis is a free event\, but those wishing to attend must sign up. To sign up\, please join our Meetup group and RSVP. \nRSVP

SUMMARY:Scientists Live: Matt Lamanna
DESCRIPTION:Assistant Curator and Head of Vertebrate Paleontology Dr. Matt Lamanna will broadcast on Facebook Live to share details of his upcoming research trip to Croatia. Discovered in the 1990s\, the site of Kolone/Porto Colonne on the coast of Istria\, Croatia preserves ~130-million-year-old dinosaur bones in shallow water on the bed of the Adriatic Sea. During the time these dinosaurs were alive\, this area of Croatia was part of a large island or long peninsula in the middle of an ancient ocean. Despite its probable significance\, the site has never been systematically explored by paleontologists. Lamanna and a team of Croatian\, Italian\, and US paleontologists\, geologists\, and scientific divers will conduct a five-day underwater reconnaissance of Kolone/Porto Colonne from October 8–13\, to discover additional fossils\, map the site in detail\, and form a comprehensive plan for future research. \nThe broadcast will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will include a question and answer segment. \nTune in at facebook.com/carnegiemnh. A recording will be posted later for those unable to watch live. \n

SUMMARY:Representing Nature in the Anthropocene
DESCRIPTION:This panel will feature representatives from three different kinds of institutions: universities\, museums\, and the media. These institutions help us understand our relationship with the environment and define possibilities moving forward. \nBut do they see these realities and possibilities in the same way? How might they work together to better formulate our current environmental realities or motivate future action? What can other institutions or perspectives add to the conversation? \nOur guests will work towards answering these questions as they share their experiences working with environmental issues and the communities they affect.
