SUMMARY:Birds and Brews 21+: Scott Weidensaul and Four Seasons Brewery
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy beer brewed locally by Four Seasons Brewery in Latrobe\, PA and hear bird expert Scott Weidensaul’s talk “A World on the Wing: The Global Odyssey of Migratory Birds.” \nAbstract:\nEven as scientists make astounding discoveries about the navigational and physiological feats that enable migratory birds to cross immense oceans or fly above the highest mountains\, go weeks without sleep or remain in unbroken flight for months at a stretch\, humans have brought many migrants to the brink. Based on his bestselling new book A World on the Wing\, author and researcher Scott Weidensaul takes you around the globe — with researchers in the lab probing the limits of what migrating birds can do\, to the shores of the Yellow Sea in China\, the remote mountains of northeastern India where tribal villages saved the greatest gathering of falcons on the planet\, and the Mediterranean\, where activists and police are battling bird poachers — to learn how people are fighting to understand and save the world’s great bird migrations. \nAbout Scott Weidensaul:\nScott Weidensaul is the author of nearly 30 books on natural history\, including the Pulitzer Prize finalist Living on the Wind and his latest\, the New York Times bestseller A World on the Wing. Weidensaul is a contributing editor for Audubon and writes for a variety of other publications\, including Living Bird. He is a Fellow of the American Ornithological Society and an active field researcher\, studying saw-whet owl migration for more than two decades\, as well as winter hummingbirds in the East\, bird migration in Alaska\, and the winter movements of snowy owls through Project SNOWstorm\, which he co-founded. \n  \nVisitors are expected to adhere to the public health guidance and Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh procedures in place at the time of their visit. \n[swcheckout site=”6″ item=”114494″]

SUMMARY:Birds and Brews 21+: Bill Rapai and Noble Stein Brewing Company
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy beer brewed locally by Noble Stein Brewing Company from Indiana\, PA and hear author and bird enthusiast Bill Rapai’s presentation The Kirtland’s Warbler: From the brink of extinction to a new model for endangered species conservation. \nThe Kirtland’s Warbler is an iconic species in Michigan\, nesting primarily in the jack pine forests of the northern Lower Peninsula. As recently as 1987 there were fewer than 400 birds in the entire population. Today\, there are more than 4\,000 birds\, and the population continues to grow to a point where the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has determined its population is now at a level to be considered “recovered.” In October 2019\, the Kirtland’s Warbler was removed from the Endangered Species List.\nThat’s a reason to celebrate\, but it doesn’t mean we can wash our hands and walk away because conservation of the Kirtland’s Warbler has special challenges. Unlike every other animal that has been removed from the Endangered Species List\, the Kirtland’s Warbler will require continued human intervention to ensure its survival. \nBill Rapai is the author of The Kirtland’s Warbler: The story of a bird’s fight for survival and the people who saved it. He is the executive director of the Kirtland’s Warbler Alliance\, a nonprofit created to support Kirtland’s Warbler conservation. \n  \nVisitors are expected to adhere to the public health guidance and Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh procedures in place at the time of their visit. \n[swcheckout site=”6″ item=”114495″]

SUMMARY:Science and Nature Lecture with Sara Klingensmith
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore seasonal natural history phenomena of Powdermill Nature Reserve! A lecture will be given in the Parker Room at 2 pm\, followed by a short outdoor exploration. Lectures are structured for adult audiences\, and children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. Program participants and visitors are expected to adhere to the public health guidance and Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh procedures in place at the time of their visit. \nFungi are ubiquitous\, yet underexplored and understudied. From massive mushrooms and mile-long mycelium to tiny yeasts and rusts\, fungi are responsible for many ecosystem services. Learn about the ecological relationships of fungi as recyclers\, symbionts\, parasites\, and even predators! Afterwards\, hit the trail and explore mushrooms commonly found in the fall. \nThis program does not contain any information on edibility or toxicity of mushrooms. \n[swcheckout site=”6″ item=”111236″]

SUMMARY:Moriarty Science Seminar: Natural history\, ecology\, and evolution in the invasive Japanese stiltgrass
DESCRIPTION:R.W. Moriarty Science Seminar Presents: Natural history\, ecology\, and evolution in the invasive Japanese stiltgrass\nSpeaker: Craig Barrett\, West Virginia University \nThis event will take place Monday\, September 26 at Noon both online and at Earth Theater. \nAbstract: Invasive species cause billions of US dollars in damage\, degrade natural and agricultural lands\, spread disease\, and threaten biodiversity. One such species\, Microstegium vimineum (stiltgrass)\, is native to eastern Asia\, and has become highly invasive in the US over the past 100 years. First discovered in Tennessee in 1919\, this species has spread to 30 US states from Texas to New York and is now in Canada. What factors drive invasiveness in this and other species? While the ecological impacts of invasive species are well studied\, the rapid evolution of invasive traits has only begun to be explored. Barrett’s research integrates phenotypic (i.e. physical characteristics of the plants)\, environmental\, and genomic data in order to identify the causes of invasiveness in plants. Eradication of this this well-established invader is highly unlikely at this point in time\, and the sheer cost of doing so would be unimaginable. Instead\, his ultimate goal is to use stiltgrass as a model to help predict and prevent future invasions. \n. \nRegister Now
