SUMMARY:Science and Nature Program
DESCRIPTION:Moths\, Mayflies\, and Molecules: Using DNA to understand the insect-based diets of birds and fish\nBrandon Hoenig is a biology PhD student at Duquesne University where he uses modern techniques to answer age-old questions in stream ecology. Brandon studies fish and birds at Powdermill Nature Reserve. He will talk to us about a DNA-based method to determine the diets of migratory songbirds and the brook\, brown\, and rainbow trout species found in the Laurel Highlands. After our chat\, we’ll navigate the woods and streams at Powdermill in search of some of the insect species that both birds and fish rely on for nutrients.

SUMMARY:Anthropocene Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Still from the short film Leafcutters\nArtist and photographer Catherine Chalmers will join Curator of Photography Dan Leers and Anthropocene Curator Dr. Nicole Heller to discuss Chalmers’ art practice and award-winning short film Leafcutters\, currently featured in Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s Anthropocene Living Room. \nChalmers’ work examines life in the Anthropocene\, the proposed name of the current geological epoch when humans have become the dominant planetary force\, restructuring earth system processes as well as the diversity and abundance of life. The Anthropocene calls into question the idea that nature and culture are separated. Similarly\, Chalmers’ work blurs the line between natural history and art. She writes in her Artist Statement at CatherineChalmers.com\, “My work is at the intersection of art\, science and nature. I do extensive research for each of my long-term\, multimedia projects and a direct engagement with the natural world is central to what I do.” \n[swcheckout site=”6″ item=”88847″]

SUMMARY:Science and Nature Program and Nature Explorers
DESCRIPTION:A Plastic Handbasket\nPlastics have revolutionized our way of life but also have a devastating effect on our planet. In honor of World Migratory Bird Day’s 2019 theme\, “Protect Birds: Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution\,” we will explore the complexities of plastics and ways that you can help! Learn about inspiring solutions that are beginning to address this problem. After the lecture\, we will head outside to look for some of the birds we are hoping to protect. \nPlastic\, Plastic Everywhere\nWhile the adults listen to a lecture about the dangers of plastic pollution\, we will get our hands dirty cleaning it up! In this active investigation\, collect plastic objects\, sort them\, and figure out why they are bad to leave behind. Then we will work together to turn plastic trash into art! After the program\, we will meet the adults for a walk through the woods.

SUMMARY:Diving for Dinosaurs: Cretaceous Fossils from Croatia
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Matt Lamanna\, Assistant Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology\, Carnegie Museum of Natural History \n \nIn the late 1980s\, Early Cretaceous-aged (~130 million-year-old) dinosaur fossils were discovered in shallow waters of the Adriatic Sea on the coast of Istria\, Croatia. Approximately 200 bones\, teeth\, and bone fragments from at least three distinct dinosaur species were found. Since then\, however\, little paleontological work has been conducted at the site. During the Early Cretaceous\, this region of Croatia is thought to have been part of a Bahamas-like series of islands; in the modern world\, such environments are often home to unique\, highly unusual species. In October 2018\, with funding support from the Carnegie Discoverers\, a multinational team of paleontologists\, geologists\, scientific divers\, and science educators conducted a paleontological survey of this Croatian site. In this presentation\, Dr. Lamanna will recount results of this effort\, which constitutes one of the world’s first underwater explorations for dinosaur fossils.
