SUMMARY:Science and Nature Program and Nature Explorers
DESCRIPTION:Dare 2B Tick Aware\nChelsea Gross is the West Nile Virus Program Technician at the Westmoreland Conservation District and a certified Dare 2B Tick Aware facilitator. Chelsea is responsible for mosquito education\, surveillance\, and control in Westmoreland County to help prevent human exposure to mosquitoes capable of transmitting West Nile Virus. Dare 2B Tick Aware is a tick and Lyme disease prevention program put together by the PA Lyme Resource Network. Come learn about common ticks in Pennsylvania and their habitats\, the diseases ticks can transmit\, early symptoms of Lyme disease\, and prevention measures to take to protect yourself from tick-borne diseases. Afterwards\, come join us on a nature hike for a tick dragging demonstration along our forest edges and trails. \nTick Talk \n“Watch out for ticks!” We all hear it\, but what does it really mean? Come explore with us as we find out more about ticks\, where they’re found\, and how to be Lyme alert. After the activities learning about ticks\, we will head outside to observe a tick drag.

SUMMARY:Diving for Dinosaurs: Cretaceous Fossils from Croatia
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Matt Lamanna\, Assistant Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology\, Carnegie Museum of Natural History \n \nIn the late 1980s\, Early Cretaceous-aged (~130 million-year-old) dinosaur fossils were discovered in shallow waters of the Adriatic Sea on the coast of Istria\, Croatia. Approximately 200 bones\, teeth\, and bone fragments from at least three distinct dinosaur species were found. Since then\, however\, little paleontological work has been conducted at the site. During the Early Cretaceous\, this region of Croatia is thought to have been part of a Bahamas-like series of islands; in the modern world\, such environments are often home to unique\, highly unusual species. In October 2018\, with funding support from the Carnegie Discoverers\, a multinational team of paleontologists\, geologists\, scientific divers\, and science educators conducted a paleontological survey of this Croatian site. In this presentation\, Dr. Lamanna will recount results of this effort\, which constitutes one of the world’s first underwater explorations for dinosaur fossils.

SUMMARY:Science and Nature Program and Nature Explorers
DESCRIPTION:Reading Tree Rings: The Art and Science of Dendrochronology\nRose-Marie Muzika has been a visiting curator of ecology at Powdermill Nature Reserve over the past year. With research interests in forest disturbances such as fire\, wind\, or insect outbreaks\, she uses dendrochronology (the study of tree rings) to gain an understanding of how forests change over time. Join us as Rose-Marie shares how dendrochronology provides a wealth of information\, and not only about the age of a tree. Each annual growth ring records information about the tree and its environment. Directly we can see evidence in the wood about damaging agents such as fire or insects; indirectly tree rings reveal climate patterns. Tree rings allow us to determine what may have been happening locally or globally\, recently or thousands of years ago. After the lecture\, Rose-Marie will help us see history in some of the trees right here at Powdermill. \nTree Time\nHave you ever seen tree cookies? These aren’t the kind of cookies you eat—they’re slices of a tree\, and they can tell us a lot about the trees from which they came! Come investigate tree cookies up close\, using hand lenses and your senses of sight and touch. You will even get to draw yourself as a tree cookie! After the activity\, children and adults will come back together to see some history in Powdermill’s trees.

SUMMARY:The Evolution of Sex and Gender
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Chase Mendenhall\, Curator of Birds\, Carnegie Museum of Natural History \nIn recent decades\, plants and animals have revealed far more body and behavior diversity than Darwin ever imagined\, especially with coopering to make and raise offspring. From bacteria to bonobos\, the fundamental questions of why sex evolved\, how bodies are built\, and how gender develops from sex will be explored. Using the science of cooperation and natural history evidence\, what it means to be an individual\, a male\, a female\, or part of a family or group will be examined. Finally\, how natural selection works on groups of organisms to give rise to functional organization like multicellularity\, sociality\, and civilization will be discussed.

SUMMARY:Educator Workshop: City Nature Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Help your students contribute to science! This workshop will explore the surprising biodiversity of habitats like sidewalk cracks\, suburban parking lots\, and the diverse array of green spaces that cross our landscape in and around the city. Learn techniques for recording and analyzing nature observations. Use the iNaturalist app to contribute data to crowdsourced science efforts\, and also sketch with pencil and paper. This workshop will introduce classroom activities that will help your students participate in a global effort to collect observations for science in the City Nature Challenge.\nFunding is available to reimburse your school or district for substitute teacher costs on the day that you attend this workshop. \nLast day to Register: February 20\, 2019 \n\n[swaddtocart site=”6″ item=”85691″]

SUMMARY:R.W. Moriarty Science Seminar
DESCRIPTION:“Natural History’s Place in Science and Society.”\nSpeaker: Josh Tewksbury \nWe are living in a rapidly changing\, increasingly resource limited world starving for answers to complex questions. In that context\, the revitalization of natural history is critical\, and a head to toe makeover of what it means to be a naturalist is also essential. Tewksbury believes a successful vision of natural history in the Anthropocene must have at least three elements: 1) an open embrace of change\, technology and the concept of the cyborg naturalist\, 2) a determination to stitch together the very best naturalist traditions of the past with the urgency of the present\, and 3) an unwavering commitment to rapid\, radical diversification of those who identify themselves as naturalists\, and the images we use to define the field\, and he provides some examples. \n \n*Co-sponsored by the 21st Century Naturalist Project\, in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh’s UPCLOSE program\, funded by the Spencer Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Moonlight and Snow\nIn January\, we hiked Sugar Camp Trail in the snow\, observing animal tracks and listening to coyotes barking as they moved through the woods. If you missed this nighttime hike\, or just want to do it again\, you are in luck! With a full moon the night before\, the forest should be set for a beautiful evening. Bring your flashlight or headlamp\, jacket\, boots\, and gloves\, and come hit the trail at night.
