DESCRIPTION:Drones in the Geosciences\nFeaturing Julia Carr\nJulia Carr\, PhD candidate in Geosciences at Penn State University\, will join us to share some of her research made possible by drones. Also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)\, these electronic gadgets are not just toys\, and Julia has put them to work in places like Taiwan\, Death Valley\, Pennsylvania\, and the northwest USA. UAV surveys permit capturing patterns at high resolution across large-scale areas\, allowing scientists to examine processes at a range of temporal and spatial scales. Working with other scientists\, Julia has coupled UAV surveys with field measurements\, other remote sensing data\, and numerical models to understand how material is moved around during events like typhoons and debris flows\, and to understand how mountain belts evolve. \nRock Cycle Rock!\nIgneous! Metamorphic! Sedimentary! Heat\, pressure\, and time can all make rocks change from one type to another as they move through the rock cycle. We will get up close and personal with some rocks as we investigate and classify them\, and we will act out the rock cycle! After the activity we will meet back with the adults for a brief foray outside.

DESCRIPTION:Postdoctoral Research Fellow\, Mason Heberling\, will do a broadcast on Facebook Live to share the importance and power of museum specimen digitization! Botanists at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History have recently embarked on a three-year project to digitize nearly 190\,000 plant specimens collected in the region. This effort is part of the Mid-Atlantic Megalopolis Project (mamdigitization.org)\, a network of thirteen herbaria spanning the densely populated urban corridor from Washington\, D.C. to New York City to achieve a greater understanding of our urban areas\, including the unique industrial and environmental history of the greater Pittsburgh area. How have the plants of Pittsburgh changed over the past century? In this interactive broadcast\, Mason will introduce the plant collection at the museum (>0.5 million specimens strong\, dating back the 1800s)\, the uses of these specimens to understanding the world around us\, and the value of digitization and making specimens freely accessible to scientists\, students\, and the public. DESCRIPTION:At the next Book and Tour\, discuss the book Future Remains: A Cabinet of Curiosities for the Anthropocene with Carnegie Museum of Natural History Curator of the Anthropocene\, Dr. Nicole Heller\, and Assistant Professor in Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh\, Dr. Tomas Matza. Future Remains is a book of lively essays featuring objects that tell a story about the Anthropocene\, the geological age when humans have become a dominant influence on the Earth system. The objects of today have much to suggest about the future and how this era will affect the planet. \nDr. Heller and Dr. Matza co-wrote the lead essay “Anthropocene in a Jar\,” which mediates on the blurry boundaries\, and often vexed relationship\, between human development and natural processes through the lens of a jar of curiously patterned sand and shells collected at Wrightsville Beach. Dr. Heller and Dr. Matza will perform their essay as it was first presented in an Anthropocene slam at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2014. The pair will also present a collection of “curiosities” from the museum that pair with the essays in the book\, including specimens from mollusks\, gems and minerals\, and our collection of birds. \nThis is a free event\, but those wishing to attend must sign up.
