SUMMARY:Science and Nature Program
DESCRIPTION:The Origin of Modern Birds: New Fossil Evidence from China and Antarctica\nMatthew C. Lamanna\, Ph.D.\nAssistant Curator\, Section of Vertebrate Paleontology\nCarnegie Museum of Natural History\nComprising over 10\,000 species\, modern birds (Neornithes) are today’s most diverse group of land-living backboned animals. Nevertheless\, the origins of these birds from toothed\, long-tailed ancestors during the Cretaceous Period (the third and final period of the Mesozoic Era\, or Age of Dinosaurs) remain poorly understood. Expeditions led by Matt Lamanna and colleagues have uncovered dozens of exquisitely-preserved avian fossils—many of them including soft-tissues such as feathers and skin—from ~120 million-year-old lake sediments in the Changma Basin of northwestern Gansu Province\, China. An overwhelming majority of these specimens belong to Gansus yumenensis\, a semi-aquatic bird that\, despite its great antiquity\, is thought to be closely related to Neornithes. More recently\, Lamanna and a different group of collaborators have conducted expeditions to latest Cretaceous exposures in the James Ross Basin of the Antarctic Peninsula in search of what may be the world’s most ancient neornithines. Dr. Lamanna will chronicle his teams’ discoveries of Chinese and Antarctic Cretaceous birds and their implications for the rise of modern avians.

DESCRIPTION:A City Built for a God: Archaeology at Antinoupolis\nThe Roman emperor Hadrian’s trip down the Nile in 130 CE is infamous\, not least because his companion–the Greek youth\, Antinous–supposedly fell from their boat and drowned. Because of Egyptian beliefs\, Antinous was deified after death\, and Hadrian founded a city for the cult of the new god at Antinoupolis (city of Antinous). An overview of the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities and Italian Archaeological Mission of the University of Florence’s ongoing archaeological fieldwork at the site will be given. One of the Mission’s main goals is to make a complete archaeological and architectural picture of the Hadrianic city. New finds from February 2017 and 2018 investigations of the city’s sacred landscape will be highlighted. \nErin Peters\, PhD\, Assistant Curator of Science and Research\, Carnegie Museum of Natural History\, Lecturer\, University of Pittsburgh

DESCRIPTION:What Does “Good” Look Like? A New Model for Human and Ecological Health\nClimate change\, food and water security crises\, declines in human and ecological health\, and loss of biodiversity and habitats are all serious symptoms caused and intensified by the lifestyles we lead in the West–lifestyles that set a standard for the rest of the world. Many of us are focused on addressing these symptoms\, which is important in the short run; but\, it is more important in the long run that we address the cause\, which is the way we live. Being less bad is not good enough anymore. Follow the journey of Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in search of a regenerative way to build and\noperate. Learn how this public garden seeks to create a new model for living that improves the health of people and the planet. \nRichard Piacentini\, PhD\, Executive Director\, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

SUMMARY:Science and Nature Program and Nature Explorers
DESCRIPTION:Aquatic Entomology: What we can learn from stream-dwelling insects\nHow healthy is the water that flows through Powdermill Run? How about the Monongahela River in downtown Pittsburgh\, or the creek that flows through your backyard? One way to find out is to look at the animals that live in the water. Macroinvertebrates are abundant in all types of aquatic habitats and tell a story about the quality of the water in which they live. Let’s learn with Research Entomologist Andrea Kautz about what kinds of bugs can be found in different types of aquatic environments and then go sample Powdermill Run for ourselves! (Note: We invite you to get into Powdermill Run with us. Please wear closed-toed and -heeled shoes\, such as galoshes or old sneakers\, if you do plan to venture into the cold stream. A towel and a change of shoes/clothes are also recommended.) \nWhere Insects Live\nWhere do we find dragonflies and water bugs? What about stoneflies and caddisflies? Come learn about the different habitats of organisms like these in a hands-on exploration of what macroinvertebrates tell us about water quality. Afterward\, we will head out to Powdermill Run to catch some macroinvertebrates ourselves! (Note: We invite you to get into Powdermill Run with us. Please wear closed-toed and -heeled shoes\, such as galoshes or old sneakers\, if you do plan to venture into the cold stream. A towel and a change of shoes/clothes are also recommended.)
