SUMMARY:Science and Nature Lecture with Sara Klingensmith
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore seasonal natural history phenomena of Powdermill Nature Reserve! A lecture will be given in the Parker Room at 2 pm\, followed by a short outdoor exploration. Lectures are structured for adult audiences\, and children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. Program participants and visitors are expected to adhere to the public health guidance and Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh procedures in place at the time of their visit. \nFungi are ubiquitous\, yet underexplored and understudied. From massive mushrooms and mile-long mycelium to tiny yeasts and rusts\, fungi are responsible for many ecosystem services. Learn about the ecological relationships of fungi as recyclers\, symbionts\, parasites\, and even predators! Afterwards\, hit the trail and explore mushrooms commonly found in the fall. \nThis program does not contain any information on edibility or toxicity of mushrooms. \n[swcheckout site=”6″ item=”111236″]

SUMMARY:Introduction to Birding Class
DESCRIPTION:Interested in bird watching but not sure where to begin? Join us at the Nature Center for our Intro to Birding Class where we will help you establish a foundation of the essential tools and knowledge needed to enjoy birding in your backyard and out on the trails. \nThe first part of the class will consist of classroom-style learning about observing and identifying birds in their natural habitat. The second part of the class (weather permitting) will allow for an opportunity to put new skills into practice by birding on one of our nature trails. \n[swcheckout site=”6″ item=”114631″]

SUMMARY:Birds and Brews 21+: Bill Rapai and Noble Stein Brewing Company
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy beer brewed locally by Noble Stein Brewing Company from Indiana\, PA and hear author and bird enthusiast Bill Rapai’s presentation The Kirtland’s Warbler: From the brink of extinction to a new model for endangered species conservation. \nThe Kirtland’s Warbler is an iconic species in Michigan\, nesting primarily in the jack pine forests of the northern Lower Peninsula. As recently as 1987 there were fewer than 400 birds in the entire population. Today\, there are more than 4\,000 birds\, and the population continues to grow to a point where the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has determined its population is now at a level to be considered “recovered.” In October 2019\, the Kirtland’s Warbler was removed from the Endangered Species List.\nThat’s a reason to celebrate\, but it doesn’t mean we can wash our hands and walk away because conservation of the Kirtland’s Warbler has special challenges. Unlike every other animal that has been removed from the Endangered Species List\, the Kirtland’s Warbler will require continued human intervention to ensure its survival. \nBill Rapai is the author of The Kirtland’s Warbler: The story of a bird’s fight for survival and the people who saved it. He is the executive director of the Kirtland’s Warbler Alliance\, a nonprofit created to support Kirtland’s Warbler conservation. \n  \nVisitors are expected to adhere to the public health guidance and Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh procedures in place at the time of their visit. \n[swcheckout site=”6″ item=”114495″]

SUMMARY:Birds and Brews 21+: Scott Weidensaul and Four Seasons Brewery
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy beer brewed locally by Four Seasons Brewery in Latrobe\, PA and hear bird expert Scott Weidensaul’s talk “A World on the Wing: The Global Odyssey of Migratory Birds.” \nAbstract:\nEven as scientists make astounding discoveries about the navigational and physiological feats that enable migratory birds to cross immense oceans or fly above the highest mountains\, go weeks without sleep or remain in unbroken flight for months at a stretch\, humans have brought many migrants to the brink. Based on his bestselling new book A World on the Wing\, author and researcher Scott Weidensaul takes you around the globe — with researchers in the lab probing the limits of what migrating birds can do\, to the shores of the Yellow Sea in China\, the remote mountains of northeastern India where tribal villages saved the greatest gathering of falcons on the planet\, and the Mediterranean\, where activists and police are battling bird poachers — to learn how people are fighting to understand and save the world’s great bird migrations. \nAbout Scott Weidensaul:\nScott Weidensaul is the author of nearly 30 books on natural history\, including the Pulitzer Prize finalist Living on the Wind and his latest\, the New York Times bestseller A World on the Wing. Weidensaul is a contributing editor for Audubon and writes for a variety of other publications\, including Living Bird. He is a Fellow of the American Ornithological Society and an active field researcher\, studying saw-whet owl migration for more than two decades\, as well as winter hummingbirds in the East\, bird migration in Alaska\, and the winter movements of snowy owls through Project SNOWstorm\, which he co-founded. \n  \nVisitors are expected to adhere to the public health guidance and Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh procedures in place at the time of their visit. \n[swcheckout site=”6″ item=”114494″]

SUMMARY:The Datafied Animal: Big Data\, Machine Learning\, and Wildlife Conservation
DESCRIPTION:R.W. Moriarty Science Seminar Presents: The Datafied Animal: Big Data\, Machine Learning\, and Wildlife Conservation\nSpeaker: Emily Wanderer\, University of Pittsburgh \nAbstract: Over the past twenty years\, scientists have developed an ever expanding “internet of animals.” This internet of animals is composed of GPS-tracking and biologging technologies and machine learning and AI tools; they are being deployed globally to produce what has been called a regime of benign surveillance of non-human life. As miniaturized GPS tags\, camera traps\, and bioacoustics monitoring now capture exponentially more data about wildlife\, scientists and engineers are developing AI and machine learning tools to process that data. These include things like facial recognition systems for bears\, an analogue to FaceNet\, Google’s human facial recognition system\, and machine learning translation of sperm whale sounds\, part of a project to develop models for the study of non-human communications. There have been many studies of the social construction of machine learning and the effects of datafication on human lives. However\, these studies leave unexamined what happens when these technologies are developed for or transferred to the study of animals. In this talk\, Wanderer brings an anthropological perspective to tech for conservation\, analyzing the ideas\, cultural categories\, and histories that shape machine learning and AI about non-human animals.\n. \nRegister Now
