Come buzz through the gardens with us and enjoy a day of art\, nature\, and fun! \n\n\nSpend the morning at Powdermill Nature Center learning about colorful\, tiny\, fast-flying hummingbirds and their important place as pollinators in their ecosystems. Go on a hike inspired by hummingbird migration\, do pollinator-inspired crafts\, and find out which plants in our area are perfect for pollinators. If we’re lucky\, we’ll get to see some hummingbirds up close. \n\n\nIn the afternoon\, head to the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art (SAMA) in Ligonier to learn about monarch butterflies and other insect pollinators.  From 1:00–4:00 p.m.\, catch migrating monarch butterflies from SAMA’s garden and see how they are tagged and recorded for science\, create a diorama to understand the monarch’s life cycle\, play the monarch migration game\, learn about the many species of milkweed native to Pennsylvania\, participate in the Fluttering Flutter painting\, and see the winning entries from the Pennsylvania Pollinator Photo Challenge.  This is a family-friendly event open to all ages. \n\nWings Over Westmoreland is supported in part by a grant from the Community Conservation Partnerships Program Environmental Stewardship Fund under the administration of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources\, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation administered through the Pennsylvania Environmental Council’s Laurel Highlands Mini-Grant Program.

Museum admission not required. \nNuclear forensics is exactly what it sounds like: think CSI: Crime Scene Investigation for radioactive materials. Nuclear forensics researchers seek to determine the origin and history (provenance) of nuclear materials found outside of regulatory control. Speaker Dr. Tyler Spano’s research involves looking for unique “fingerprints” in uranium materials that can give clues into what the sample is\, where it may have come from\, and what processes it has been through. CURIES (the Compendium of Uranium Raman and Infrared Experimental Spectra) serves as a “fingerprint” library. But birds are hard to protect if we do not know where they find food and shelter during migration\, or which window designs actually keep them safe. In this talk\, Dr. DeGroote will discuss his research tracing the journey of migrating landbirds across forests\, fields\, and built environments to find practical ways to reduce risk. Museum admission not required. \nIn 1530 the Venetian painter Sebastiano del Piombo (1485–1547) chose an unusual surface for a painting of Christ: a large hewn stone. Treating the stone as a portable canvas\, Sebastiano created a work of art that his contemporaries viewed as “almost eternal” and initiated 150 years of a flourishing practice of painting on stone. From slate\, to lapis lazuli\, to amethyst\, painters made dizzying works atop all sorts of stones. Blending ecocriticism with art history\, this talk examines the ecological\, religious\, and cultural contexts in which this idiosyncratic genre emerged and unearths the hidden labor of stone masons\, international and colonial circuits of exchange\, and the philosophy of the time. \nRegistration is required to attend R.W. DESCRIPTION:Talk: Following Pots from the Dead Sea Plain to Pittsburgh \nSpeaker: Dr. Morag Kersel and Meredith Chesson \nWhen: Thursday\, March 11\, 2027\, 6:00–7:00 p.m. \nWhere: Art Theater and online via Zoom \nTickets: Free. Museum admission not required. \nIn the early 1960s\, archaeologist Paul Lapp noticed a flood of Early Bronze Age (3600–2000 BCE) pots in antiquities shops in Jerusalem and Amman\, unmistakably looted from the prehistoric cemetery at Bâb adh-Dhrâʿ\, a site along the Dead Sea Plain in Jordan. In response\, Lapp and colleagues initiated excavations in the cemetery to save pots and other grave goods from also ending up on the antiquities market. Many of these items now reside at Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Since 2011\, Morag Kersel and Meredith Chesson have been following Early Bronze Age pots from these same Dead Sea sites. They conduct pedestrian and drone surveys\, use archival resources\, and collect ethnographic interviews to trace how these vessels have moved\, and to reconstruct their social\, economic\, and political meanings from 5\,000 years ago to today. \nRegistration is required to attend R.W. Museum admission not required. \nA career in conservation is based on responses. Conservators react to object damage\, disaster recovery\, technical study\, and various ethical or legal issues. An objects conservator may be asked to be an active part of archaeological excavations\, collections management\, repatriation\, exhibitions\, and loans. Collaborations may involve colleagues from anthropology\, classics\, art history\, historic preservation\, chemistry\, and materials science.
