The museum’s Alcohol House, featuring the amphibians and reptiles collection, opens to the public for the first time
Season includes events exploring the science of Indiana Jones, Pride, Harry Potter, and Halloween
Pittsburgh, PA — Carnegie Museum of Natural History announced the 2020 lineup of its popular After Dark event series for adults 21 and older. Since these programs often sell out, the museum will offer a Season Pass option to attend all six events at a discount. VIP Season Pass holders will receive exclusive behind-the-scenes views of the museum’s collections that are rarely available to the public. Tickets go on sale Friday, January 17, 2020.
The season kicks off with Speakeasy After Dark on Friday, March 13, delving into the Roaring ‘20s and featuring trivia, popular cocktails from the decade, scientific discoveries like penicillin, controversies like the Scopes Monkey Trial, the Pirates 1925 World Series win, and period costumes. The museum will offer its first public tours of the Alcohol House to VIP ticket holders.
Previous After Dark events examined the science of pop culture themes like Game of Thrones, vampires, Jurassic Park, and Stranger Things. The museum opens from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., and attendees, often dressed in themed costumes, roam the galleries to complete scavenger hunts, compete at trivia, and participate in hands-on activities that link the themes to the museum’s collections, science, and research.
“After Dark is one of the most rewarding programs my team oversees,” said Leslie Wilson, Manager of Onsite Programs. “I often hear Pittsburghers say that they remember this museum fondly, but they haven’t been here since they were kids. We can have lifelong relationships with the wonder of the natural world that don’t switch off at adulthood. After Dark invites our audiences to reconnect and regain those experiences, or to experience them for the first time.”
“We anchor each event with a pop culture theme or something in the zeitgeist,” said Laurie Giarratani, Director of Education. “Then we connect it to science, often with surprising twists. We’re fortunate that our museum’s collections and research speak to the entirety of nature, so there’s no theme that we can’t tackle. This year we’re excited to offer exclusive experiences behind the scenes, including tours of the Alcohol House, one of the most fascinating best-kept secrets in Pittsburgh.”
The 2020 After Dark season also includes Dr. Jones After Dark on June 19, Potterfest on July 31, and Haunted Museum on October 23. Rounding out the season are the museum’s second annual pay-what-you-wish Celebrate Pride After Dark on June 26 and an all ages Potterfest Yule Ball on December 4 for the entire family.
Standard and Fast Pass tickets are available for each event. Fast Pass holders get access to shorter, quicker lines at registration and bars. Season Passes include admission to all six events. VIP Season Passes include the benefits of the Fast Pass ticket, plus early access to reserve behind the scenes After Dark activities like Alcohol House tours.
