Super Science Saturdays
Upcoming Super Science Saturdays
February 29, 2020 Noon – 4 p.m.
Celebrate this special day once every four years! Leap Day keeps our human calendar in line with the actual pace the Earth takes around the sun (365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds). Learn about animals and insects that leap and why, plus human Leap Day traditions like the deal St. Brigid struck with St. Patrick about Leap Day marriage proposals.
Egg-cellent Egg Hunt
April 11, 2020 Noon – 4 p.m.
Solve clues to find treat-filled eggs hidden in the museum! This egg hunt is a crowd favorite and allows you to enjoy our exhibits at your own pace, play in Discovery Basecamp, and meet live animals. The Egg-cellent Egg Hunt is ideal for children 3–10 years old. Scavenger hunt maps and prizes are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
May 16, 2020 Noon – 4 p.m.
Did you know we have about 13 million insect specimens in our collection? If you’ve got a question about a bug, it’s likely we’ve got the answer in the Section of Invertebrate Zoology. At Bug Bonanza, get up close to some of our most interesting specimens, learn why insects are important (not icky!), and see insects from our Living Collection.
Stuffed Animal Safari
June 13, 2020 Noon – 4 p.m.
Bring your favorite stuffed animal along for a Super Science Saturday play date! Together, you can complete a scavenger hunt through the museum to learn about real animals that are the inspiration behind our plush friends. Plus, discover the origin of the teddy bear and visit our Vet Tech to make sure your stuffed animal is in excellent health.
July 11, 2020 Noon – 4 p.m.
We heart dinosaurs 24/7…and especially on Jurassic Day. Tour the temporary exhibition Dinosaur Armor to see the evolution of armor in animals featuring casts of recently discovered dinosaurs and artistic representations. Engage in hands-on dinosaur-themed activities throughout the museum, wander through Dinosaurs in Their Time, chat with our Interpreters, and discover how animals in our Living Collection are related to dinosaurs.
August 8, 2020 Noon – 4 p.m.
Back by popular demand! Celebrate the second Cat-urday of August with us! Take spotlight tours featuring wild cats, see a cat mummy, and complete a cat-themed scavenger hunt. Meet adoptable cats (and maybe take one home, we know you want to). Make your cat a new toy and plant some cat grass for it to chow down on.
September 19, 2020 Noon – 4 p.m.
Our researchers are critical to everything we do at the museum, and you can meet them! Whether you’re fascinated by dinosaurs, obsessed with plants, or want to know everything about snails, there’s a researcher here to chat with you and show you what they do.
October 17, 2020 Noon – 4 p.m.
Trick-or-Treat among dinosaurs and mummies! Wear your costume, meet our spookiest live animals, and participate in hands-on Halloween-themed activities.
Holidays Around the World
December 19, 2020 Noon – 4 p.m.
Celebrate the holidays with us! Play festive games from around the world, learn about cultural traditions with museum artifacts, and write your letter to Santa.
