Biography
Mineralogist Marc Wilson is curator of collections for the Section of Minerals at Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Wilson received his MS in geology/mineralogy (1979) and his BA in geology (1975) from Michigan Technological University. Wilson’s extensive experience includes museum and specimen management, exhibit generation, organization of mineral symposia, and mineralogical investigations of active and abandoned mine sites. His research on new techniques for mapping, remote sensing, and specimen analysis and curation have appeared in such publications as The Mineralogical Record, Rocks & Minerals, American Mineralogist, Journal of Geochemical Exploration, and Journal of Archeological Science.
Wilson was the lead organizer of the Carnegie Gem & Mineral Show, one of the most prestigious shows in the country, for all nine years of its existence.
He has been a consulting editor for Rocks & Minerals since 1998, and he served on the board of directors for the Society of Mineral Museum Professionals from 1996–1999. He was inducted into the National Rockhound and Lapidary Hall of Fame in 2001. Wilson is a co-recipient of the Friends of Mineralogy Award of Merit and an Eastern Federation of Mineralogical and Lapidary Societies honoree for the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies Scholarship Award.
