Curator, Mammals
Biography
John Wible is the curator of mammals, the head of the Section of Mammals, and the co-editor of Annals of Carnegie Museum, the quarterly scientific publication of Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Wible served as dean of science at Carnegie Museum of Natural History from 2000–2002 and as an interim co-director of the museum from 2000–2001 and from 2014-2015.
Wible received his BA in anthropology from Cornell University in 1975, his MA in anthropology from New York University in 1977, and his PhD in anatomy from Duke University in 1984. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship in anatomy at the University of Chicago from 1985–1987. He was an assistant professor and then an associate professor in the Department of Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology at the University of Louisville from 1989–1998 as well as a research associate/assistant professor in the Department of Organismal Biology and Anatomy at the University of Chicago in 1988. He moved to Carnegie Museum of Natural History in 1998 and lives in Ross Township with his wife and two sons and a houseful of rabbits and cats.
Wible’s research is focused on the tree of life of mammals, understanding the evolutionary relationships between living and extinct taxa, and how the mammalian fauna on Earth got to be the way it is today. He uses his expertise on the anatomy of living mammals, in particular the skull, to reconstruct the lifeways of extinct mammals.
Research topics for which he served as primary author include monographic treatments of the skulls of the following recent mammals: the Hispaniolan solenodon (Solenodon paradoxus), the yellow armadillo (Euphractus sexcinctus), the African palm civet (Nandinia binotata), and the short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis brevecaudata). He has also served as primary author on monographic treatments of the skulls of three Late Cretaceous mammals from Mongolia: the multituberculate Kryptobaatar dashzevegi and the eutherians Zalambdalestes lechei and Maelestes gobiensis. He has been awarded research grants from such sources as the National Science Foundation and the National Geographic Society.
Since January 2007, Wible has served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Mammalian Evolution. He was also a co-editor of the 2006 book Amniote Paleobiology: Perspectives on the Evolution of Mammals, Birds, and Reptiles.
