Opens May 1, 2027

Egypt on the Nile returns a fan-favorite topic to Carnegie Museum of Natural History galleries, inviting you to explore ancient Egypt from a new perspective by examining ancient Egyptian relationships with the Nile River and the surrounding landscapes. As you move through this immersive exhibition, you’ll discover how climate, landscape, and the natural world shaped ancient Egypt. By focusing on the connections between nature and culture, Egypt on the Nile offers new insight into daily life, religion, and funerary traditions in ancient Egypt informed by more than 5,000 objects in the museum’s care.

You’ll encounter beautifully handcrafted belongings spanning more than 5,000 years of Egyptian history—from the Paleolithic (around 3,000,000-7,000 BCE) through the Byzantine Period (around 330-700 CE)—alongside plants, birds, insects, and mammals and other specimens that surrounded and inspired the ancient Egyptians. With the Dahshur boat at its center, you’ll see familiar items alongside objects and specimens that have never before been on display. 

Exhibition highlights include:

The Dahshur Boat of Senwosret III. For the first time since the 1950s, you’ll be able to view this 4,000-year-old funerary boat from all angles, inviting a new perspective. It is one of only four boats of its kind preserved today.

The Tomb of Menna. Step into a recreation of part of the tomb chapel of Menna, an Overseer of Fields and Plowlands and a Scribe who lived over 3,000 years ago. Paintings of Menna and his family adorn the walls, and reach out and touch the beautiful paintings to animate stories about their cultural and religious significance. 

Egyptian Blue. The world’s oldest human-made pigment, Egyptian blue, was recreated by researchers from Carnegie Museum of Natural History and Washington State University to better understand ancient techniques. Learn the science behind the pigment and see a varied selection of Egyptian blue objects.

Interactive Stations. Touch, smell, and hear the world of the ancient Egyptians. Compare soil from Egypt and Pittsburgh to understand how climate impacts the preservation of objects, hear the sounds of Egyptian animals, smell the scents of mummification, and work like a scientist to examine mortuary materials using a microscope.

Animated Object Stories. Ancient Egyptians were some of the world’s earliest ecologists. By pressing a touchable object replica, you will reveal animated stories that explore the sacred status of the dung beetle, the creative power of the lotus, and the persistence of the fly.

Fossils, Insects, and More. Natural science specimens representing all the museum’s scientific sections bring to life the natural world of Egypt. You will encounter everything from herbarium specimens collected especially for the exhibition to Egyptian dinosaurs and fossils.

Adopt-a-Net Program at Powdermill Nature Reserve

Help support the birds, researchers, and staff at the Richard P. Mellon Avian Research Center by adopting an avian mist net today!

The Richard P. Mellon Avian Research Center (PARC) at Powdermill is part of Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s biological research station, Powdermill Nature Reserve, located in the Laurel Highlands of Southwestern Pennsylvania. PARC operates a bird banding station, conducts research using the Motus telemetry network to track birds, and evaluates avian perception of glass in an experimental flight tunnel to help reduce bird window collisions. Above all else, the well-being of every bird is always our top priority!  

New for 2026, friends and donors can now “adopt-a-net” to help support the important work happening at PARC in all seasons. Available at four levels from $150-$2500+, all donors will receive e-updates about the birds that show up in the specific net they’ve adopted. Additional tiered benefits are listed below and include virtual programming, event invitations, and the opportunity to get a close-up look at the banding process alongside our scientists.

Adopt at the Northern Saw-whet Owl Level

More about the PARC Mist Nets:  

PARC operates a year-round banding station and effort varies seasonally. All of the mist nets are opened five days per week during spring and fall migration, up to half the mist nets are opened three days per week during the summer breeding season, and 6-8 mist nets are opened two days per week in the winter if weather permits. From the first deployment of the mist nets, about a half hour before sunrise, to the close of the banding day, nets are checked every 30 to 40 minutes. The nets themselves are designed for the safe capture of birds, large and small, and each bird is placed in a small drawstring bag for its trip to the banding station. 

Once in the lab, birds are identified to species, banded (or reprocessed if they had been banded previously), and information about their age, sex, wing length, fat deposits, and body mass are recorded. 

The band itself is a small numbered bracelet issued through the US Geological Survey.  It causes no physical harm to the bird, nor does it impair flight, feeding, or any bird behavior. 

The whole process of collecting data for each captured bird takes less than a minute, after which the bird is promptly released through a small sliding door in the window next to the banding desk.

Botany

The Botany collection is home to a large herbarium of over 550,000 dried, pressed, and mounted plant specimens. While today the museum preserves samples on loose herbarium sheets, the samples here are book bound herbaria, which were once popular to store and display delicate botanical specimens. Individual loose herbarium sheets became common practice in the 1700s, but book bound herbaria remained popular especially among private collectors and amateur naturalists.

Plan an expedition to the Kamin Hall of Dinosaurs—Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s core exhibition featuring real dinosaur fossils.

This exhibition is home to dozens of original fossils from throughout the Mesozoic Era displayed in scientifically accurate reconstructions of their ancient habitats.

Are the Dinosaur Fossils on Display Real?

About 75% of the more than 230 objects on display are original fossils from one of the finest paleontological collections in the world, and most of the exhibition’s dinosaur skeletons are real, not replicas. Several of these skeletons—including those of the iconic dinosaurs Apatosaurus louisae, Diplodocus carnegii, and Tyrannosaurus rex—are holotypes, the original specimens upon which their respective species are based.

In the many decades since the discovery of Diplodocus, scientific interpretations of dinosaurs and their lifestyles have changed dramatically. This exhibition uses up-to-date paleontological evidence—much of which has been provided by the museum’s own scientists—to accurately reconstruct the appearance and behavior of these colossal creatures.

For instance, we now know that Apatosaurus and Diplodocus (two famous long-necked dinosaurs) did not spend their lives wallowing in swamps and that predatory dinosaurs such as T. rex walked with their tails held off the ground and their backs horizontal. The three-horned Triceratops may have used its famous headgear more for display than for fighting, whereas some theropod dinosaurs (such as Anzu wyliei, the notorious “Chicken from Hell”) would have closely resembled their modern descendants—modern birds.

Dinosaur Exhibition Layout

Many museum exhibitions group extinct species according to geologic time, but this exhibition takes this concept several steps further. In this exhibition, dinosaurs and other Mesozoic animals are shown in extraordinarily detailed reconstructions of their respective environments. Like the dinosaurs themselves, the habitats in this exhibition are firmly grounded in scientific evidence.

A panicked Apatosaurus smashes a small tree known from fossils found in the same Jurassic-aged rocks. A sculpted trackway of a hungry T. rex is based directly on the only known footprint of this terrifying meat-eater. The cat-sized Cretaceous mammal Didelphodon angrily confronts a much larger Triceratops. In short, in our museum’s exhibition, when dinosaur species are exhibited together, they actually lived together—their fossils are found in the same rock formations, and in many cases, the same quarries.

When Andrew Carnegie founded the museum more than 125 years ago, he sought to “bring the world to Pittsburgh,” and today, the museum cares for over 22 million objects and specimens from around the world. But why do natural history museums collect objects and specimens? How do they care for them? What is their purpose? The Stories We Keep: Bringing the World to Pittsburgh explores these big questions about natural history museums through five distinct stories featuring the vast Carnegie Museum of Natural History collection. 

Through hands-on games and activities, expansive collection displays, and digital experiences, The Stories We Keep: Bringing the World to Pittsburgh invites you to consider what it means to collect and why natural history museum collections matter. In this exhibition, you will:

• Discover stories from past and present scientific expeditions to Angola.

• Encounter the Baron Ernest de Bayet collection of invertebrate fossils, one of the museum’s earliest and largest acquisitions.

• Watch conservation and collections staff care for collections in the Visible Lab. Ask them your questions during designated Visible Lab Q&A times daily at 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

• Create your own collection drawer, play an insect guessing game, and browse archival photos.

• Uncover 1898-1922 museum director William J. Holland’s role in shaping the museum into a world-class institution. 

• Get to know the scientists who collect, care for, and study the 13 million specimens in the Invertebrate Zoology collection, and why each bug in the collection is a data point that helps us understand our world.

• Learn about Indigenous guides like Paul Commanda (Nbisiing) and George Carey (Omuskego) who led museum expeditions across northern Ontario, Quebec, and Labrador.*
